Thanksgiving Beach Walk: Sanibel Sea School to offer free annual tradition
Join “Doc Bruce” Thanksgiving morning for a free beach walk to learn more about what washes ashore on Sanibel’s beaches.
Sanibel Sea School Director of Education Nicole Finnicum said the Thanksgiving Beach Walk is a Sea School annual tradition.
“It’s a good way for us and the community to have that opportunity to be thankful for everything that the ocean gives us,” she said.
Every Thanksgiving morning the community congregates to the Sanibel Sea School’s flagship campus, 455 Periwinkle Way around 8:45 a.m. for some coffee and socialization. Finnicum said they usually meet inside and share information about the Sanibel Sea School, as well as the programs that are offered.
Although the Sanibel Sea School provides the coffee and tea, they ask those who attend to bring their own mugs.
“Doc Bruce will lead us in a guided beach walk out to the beaches here,” Finnicum said at 9 a.m. “He will basically teach us about what has washed ashore that day. We will definitely focus on shells, probably birds, as well as any other mysterious creatures that have washed ashore that day.”
She encourages participants to bring their ocean related questions.
Last year more than 60 people participated in the free Thanksgiving Beach Walk with the Sanibel Sea School.
“This year we hope to have at least that many,” Finnicum said. “It’s for everybody. It’s for families to bring their kids, bring their dogs if they are on a leash. It is a great way for all of us to get together on Thanksgiving and have that moment of community.”
The walk typically lasts for approximately two hours. She said people can join them for the whole walk, or trickle in and out along the way.
“It is pretty casual,” Finnicum said.
She said the Sanibel Sea School enjoys offering the free community beach walks throughout the season.
“The Thanksgiving Beach Walk kind of kicks off our free community beach walk sessions. We will be offering, in the future, one a month through April. From here on out they will be offered on Saturdays beginning in December,” Finnicum said, adding the dates and times will be advertised on social media.
