Dart tournament to help Cape woman with medical expenses
A dart tournament this weekend will raise funds for a local woman who is in need of an MRI.
The Dart Tourney For Buzz’s Bern will take place Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. at BackStreets Sports Bar, at 915 S.E. 47th Terrace. It will consist of a steel tip blind draw at 4 p.m., with a $10 buy-in.
“The local dart family is a close one, so we expect to see many players participating in the draw and dart game,” Pamela Hazelton, a spokeswoman for BackStreets, said.
There will be Shoot the Balloon mystery prizes, with first, second and third place.
Along with a Shoot the Stars darts game, there will also be silent auctions and raffles.
“All raffle and auction items are donated, so 100 percent of the money raised goes to help Bernadette (Carocci),” she said.
Some items include a Jgermeister fire pit, handmade flag from Nautique Designs, a Wicked Dolphin basket and photo shoot session, along with gift cards and certificates to local restaurants and more.
According to organizers, Bernadette Carocci underwent brain surgery in 2013 for olfactory groove meningioma. Since then she has developed many issues that doctors have not been able to diagnose.
Suffering from intense migraine-type head pain and burning mouth syndrome, Carocci has not been able to work for the past four years. Advised in 2013 that she would need regularly scheduled MRIs to track the growth of another tumor, denials of disability benefits to her has made the process difficult.
Most recently, specialists ordered an MRI to either identify or rule out pituitary gland issues. Having only met $300 of her $5,000 deductible, she is having trouble coming up with funds to get the test.
“This is how we show Bernadette she is not alone – by coming together to show our support,” Hazelton said.
