Mayor Kevin Ruane was presented with the Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero Award during the City Council meeting yesterday morning.

Florida League of Cities Executive Director Mike Sittig said presenting Ruane with the award was a special honor for him Tuesday morning.

“Thank you for your leadership and participation in Florida League of Cities Mayor,” he said.

The award is given to individuals who go above and beyond the Municipal Home Rule.

“The Municipal Home Rule has never been more threatened than now. Mayor Ruane recognizes the importance of having strong relationships with his legislators and keeping them informed on issues that are most important to his community,” Sittig said. “He holds many leadership roles with the League of Cities and he is an incredible advocate for government decision making being made at city hall when possible verses the state legislature. He is very deserving of this award. Thank you Mayor Ruane for all you do to protect Home Rule and preserve the quality of life for the City of Sanibel.”

After the award was presented to Ruane the crowd erupted in applause while standing.

Ruane thanked Sittig for making the trip to Sanibel from Tallahassee.

“You are not only a friend, but great partner,” he said. “Whatever it is, we can always count on the league to be there and help us with our advocacy because honestly with so many issues that we have had with water quality being one. It is really an honor to look at the league to try to put together the largest proclamation in Florida’s history and having 163 mayors come together.”

Ruane said it is an honor to receive the award, but more importantly he thanked Sitting for his friendship and everything he has done.

Vice Mayor Mick Denham said last year Ruane visited 46 representatives to support the issues of Sanibel.

“Well deserved,” he said.
