Cape Coral municipal election is Tuesday

By Staff | Nov 2, 2017

With early voting wrapping up this weekend, the general election is set for Tuesday.

Early voting kicked off Monday and will continue through Saturday.

Vicki Collins, spokeswoman for the Lee County Elections, suggested casting a ballot early.

“It’s always better, I think, to take advantage of early voting or vote by mail because you never know what can happen on Election Day,” she said.

As of Thursday afternoon, just over 1,500 people had taken part in early voting between the cities of Cape Coral and Fort Myers. Like the Cape, Fort Myers also has a municipal election going on.

The Thursday before the Oct. 3 primary, an estimated 600 voters had cast a ballot early.

For the General Election, five early voting sites in Lee County have been open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. People who decide to take advantage of early voting can do so at any of the five locations.

The early voting sites are:

n Cape Coral-Lee County Library, 921 S.W. 39th Terrace

n Dunbar-Jupiter Hammon Public Library, 3095 Blount St., Fort Myers

n Fort Myers Regional Library, 2450 First St., Fort Myers

n Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers, 4224 Renaissance Preserve Way, Fort Myers

n Cape Coral-Lee County Elections Branch Office, 1039 S.E. Ninth Ave.

Voters will need to bring their photo signature identification.

According to Collins, 11,634 vote-by-mail ballots had been accepted as of Thursday afternoon.

“For Cape Coral, we had 29,734 ballots requested,” she said.

Vote-by-mail ballots are due by 7 p.m. Tuesday – Election Day – to be counted.

They can be put in the mail, as postage is covered, or dropped off at one of the drop boxes.

“If they were going to mail them, they really should have already mailed them,” Collins said. “I would drop it off at one of our office locations.”

The drop boxes are at the:

n Cape Coral Branch Office, at 1039 S.E. Ninth Ave.: Until 3 p.m. Tuesday

n South Fort Myers Branch Office, at 13180 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers: Until 3 p.m. Tuesday

n Main Office, at 2480 Thompson St., Third Floor: Until 7 p.m. Tuesday

Voters who requested a mail ballot but decide to vote early or Tuesday can do so. They just need to bring their entire mail ballot packet, including the envelope, to the polling site and surrender it.

“They do not have to vote that (mail-in) ballot if they’re running late,” she said.

On Election Day, the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Again, people will need to have their photo signature identification to vote.

“Know where your precinct is before Election Day,” Collins said. “Bring your sample ballot.”

To change any personal information, visit online or call the office.

“If you have moved or made any changes – it would be easier for you to update your information before Election Day,” she said.

According to officials, there are 112,493 registered active voters in the Cape.

Collins urged all voters to get out and cast a ballot.

“It’s very important for people to vote in their local election,” she said. “These are the people who affect your world immediately. The city government people are responsible for the growth of your city and how the money is spent.”
