Registration is now open for the Sanibel Sea School after school programs, surfing and ocean art, which will kick off this month.

Sanibel Sea School Director of Communications Leah Biery said their after school programs were received really well, resulting in parents asking if they could offer them again. She said surfing is always a highly requested activity and ocean art is great to offer around the holidays, due to the end result making a great present.

The after school surfing program will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, Nov. 14, Nov. 28, and Dec. 5. It is $20 per day, or $75 for the four class series. The surfing is open to 12 per class. The weather and waves will determine the location for each class.

Biery said the Sanibel Sea School staff can pick up kids from the Sanibel Recreation Center on Tuesdays, or parents can drop off their children at the flagship campus, 455 Periwinkle Way.

Biery said the surfing, open to first through fifth grade students, teaches the youth how to paddle and maneuver on a surf board. She said they will learn how to paddle out to the waves and learn how to turn back around. In addition, the kids will learn how to pop up on the board and surf.

The classes are designed for the youth to take either one, or all four as a series, Biery explained because the teachers will cater to everyone’s skill levels.

“They will evaluate their skills and help them move forward from there,” she said.

Ocean art, offered to first through eighth grade students, will kick off on Thursday, Nov. 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is also $20 per day, or $75 for all four. The other classes will be held on Thursday, Dec. 7, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. Each class will be held at the Sanibel Sea School flagship campus. This series is open to 20 youth per class.

The ocean art will be created from natural materials, or recycled items. Biery said the Sanibel Sea School will provide all of the materials.

“We will create projects people love to receive as gifts,” she said, such as jewelry and ornaments.

Each week the youth will create a different ocean art project.
