Beach parking increases a dollar
The City Council approved an increase in beach parking fees, as well as an increase for their B and BC decal program at their Tuesday, Oct. 3 meeting.
Councilman Chauncey Goss voted against the ordinance.
Beach parking will be raised from $4 to $5 an hour, and the B decal will go from $99 to $124, and BC from $198 to $248. The increase goes into effect Nov. 15.
The B decals are for nonresident and non-Sanibel ad valorem taxpayer property owners and the BC decals are for nonresidents.
City Manager Judie Zimomra made the recommendation of Nov. 15 to go into effect due to Hurricane Irma.
“If it’s effective today we cannot administer it,” she said. “We need at least 30 days.”
The ordinance was originally slated to begin Oct. 1, but the public hearing was pushed back to Oct. 3 due to Hurricane Irma.
For fiscal years 2011 through 2014 parking was $2 an hour before being increased to $3 in 2015. On Nov. 1, 2015, the rates were increased to $4 an hour.
The revenue collected is used to maintain the beach facilities and provide shared-use path access to the beaches.
