For Debbie Sheme, owner of Sanibel Dance, Pilates and Yoga, her aerial yoga classes meld two of her favorite things together: yoga and dance.

“I love equally dance and yoga and aerial yoga to me, is about art and movement,” Sheme said. “It takes yoga to a whole other level.”

Although her Tuesday 4 p.m. kid’s aerial yoga class which began on Sept. 26 is sold out, Sheme added another session which take place on Tuesdays from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

The Tuesday classes are suitable for children ages 7 and older. The classes, which run until December, are $350 per child and include monthly workshops. Broken down, the classes come to about $17 per week. Registration for the class is required. The second kid’s aerial yoga session will take place from January through May.

“This price includes monthly dance workshops. Each month we have a two hour dance workshop in different genres and styles of dance such as jazz, hip hop, ballet, pilates and modern. Our monthly workshops are to introduce students to different styles of dance, movement and express. Parents have the option to pay in full or to pay in monthly payments if needed. We want our students to be well rounded in all styles of dance and that they are when they study at Sanibel Dance,” Sheme said. “It’s truly a pleasure to have so many children through the years come to the studios. I love seeing the kids on island growing up and I care very much about each and every child that walks through my studio doors.”

For Audrey Mulka, 9, aerial yoga helps her feel more relaxed.

“I feel like I’m able to stretch more. My favorite move is the mosquito,” Mulka said.

Besides helping with relaxation, aerial yoga is known to assist with a myriad of other things.

“They learn to develop trust, they gain a different perspective and body awareness,” said Alyssa Centofanti, lead yoga instructor for the children and adult divisions. “When they’re in (the silk) they’re exploring and playing and they’re discovering what they can do.”

Sheme also offers a mommy and me aerial class on Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. which is aimed for children under the age of 7. The cost to register for a 10 week session is $170.

Sheme even hosts aerial yoga birthday parties at her studio for up to 10 kids. All parents are required to do is bring either a cake or cupcakes. The cost is $225 for two hours.

For those seeking to learn more about aerial yoga, the studio will hold a Level I Aerial Teacher Training Workshop Nov. 4-5 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participants will earn 20 hours of CEU (Continuing Education Units). The Level II workshop will take place Dec. 9-10. Those who register for both classes will receive a discounted rate of $950 per person. Registration is limited to 11 people. Sanibel Dance, Pilates and Yoga was recently certified by the Yoga Alliance as a teacher training school.

Sheme will have daily aerial yoga classes for adults as season approaches. Currently, the studio offers aerial classes from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
