John Gunter and Graham Madison Morris were the top two vote-getters in the Cape Coral City Council Primary for District 1 Tuesday, meaning the two will now face off in the Nov. 7 General Election.

Gunter, who has never run for political office, received 45.67 percent of the vote; Morris received 35.48 percent, and James Frederick Foraker culled 19.94 percent in the three-way race.

Gunter said he was glad to be moving forward.

“We’ve worked hard to represent how the people want to be represented,” Gunter said. “We worked hard and the results show the effort.”

Morris, said he is ready to go into the General Election.

“I think all my volunteer activity in the city and the time I spent getting to know people and being a past president of the civic association helped,” Morris said. “I got great support from the organizations in the city.”

Gunter said, as a business owner for 30 years, he knows how to budget and lead and run things.

“I have a different mindset from those who don’t have a business attribute,” Gunter said. “We’re putting the effort into it to make sure we get the word out to the people.”

Morris said in the time between this and his first run four years ago, he has gotten to know much more about the city, and that should make him the better candidate.

“I just have to get the information out there and let the voters decide,” Morris said.

Foraker, who came in third and so did not advance, said he plans to run again in four years and that he enjoyed every step in this process.

“We’re going to keep at it for four more years. We’ve met some wonderful people along the way and made wonderful friends. We’ve come to love Cape Coral even more,” Foraker said.
