Over 50 businesses attended the Best of the Islands award luncheon which was held Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa. The annual luncheon is presented by the Sanibel Captiva Islander and Reporter.

Each year, the Sanibel Captiva Islander and Reporter sends out ballots allowing the public to vote on their favorite businesses, services and organizations. New categories for this year included Best Pickleball Courts, Best T-Shirt Shop, Best Tapas, Best Sailing School, Best Landscape Equipment, Best Dumpster Service, Best Italian Dining and Best Historic Site.

Mark Martens, senior advertising account executive at the Sanibel Captiva Islander and Reporter, said the luncheon was a huge success again this year.

“Sundial Beach Resort did a tremendous job once again on the lunch and Bailey’s General Store provided an outstanding dessert. This is always one of my favorite events of the year as it is our chance to recognize those outstanding businesses that are voted Best of the Islands by our readers. My thanks to Sundial and Bailey’s and congratulations to all of the winners,” Martens said.

Sundial Beach Resort & Spa took home nine wins this year which included: Best Full Service Resort, Best Tennis, Best Pickleball Courts, Best Tiki Bar, Best Bartender, Best Sushi, Best Steak, Best Chef and Best Server.

“Winning nine awards this year was a record for us. It was an honor for our outstanding Sundial team to be acknowledged by our community as the best in so many categories. We’re especially thrilled that three from our Sundial family won individual awards for Best Chef, Best Bartender and Best Server. Hosting the awards luncheon for the second year made the awards even more special,” said Phillip Starling, general manager of Sundial Resort & Spa.

Sanibel Day Spa, which was another big winner, received Best Hair Salon/Barber, Best Manicure/Pedicure, Best Nail Salon, Best Salon and Best Spa.

“We are beyond grateful and humbled by the reader’s choice in voting us the “Best of” in five categories. I am so thankful to have such a wonderfully talented staff and our clients are like family. Doesn’t get better than that,” said Pam Attuso, owner of Sanibel Day Spa.

Longtime winner, Donna Puma, owner of Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream and Gepetto’s Beach Foodies, has won Best Ice Cream since 2004. Pinocchio’s also won Best Gelato and Best Frozen Yogurt. Gepetto’s won Best Beach Food To Go and Best Croissant Bakery.

“Our family and staff always appreciate the recognitions we receive from awards and accolades throughout the year. However, the Best of the Islands awards have a special meaning to our family, our staff and our brands. Winning “Best of the Islands” for our crafts are a testament of our efforts and the personal connections we cultivated with our loyal Customers who vote for us each year as island businesses. For that, we are truly grateful,” Puma said.

Bailey’s General Store, another longtime winner, took home five awards.

“We’re honored and pleased to be voted Best Of The Islands’ Wine, Beer, Grocery, General Store, and Coffee Bar. Thank you Sanibel and Captiva and we look forward to continuing our tradition of quality service,” said Calli Johnson, project manager at Bailey’s General Store.

First time winner, Ginny Wagner of Totally Baked, said winning Best Bakery and Best New Restaurant felt amazing.

“I attribute it to all the support we’re received. Our hopes and dreams have come true. It makes me strive for success for the upcoming years,” Wagner said.
