Naples Zoo closed for repairs

By Staff | Sep 15, 2017

The Naples Zoo has significant damage throughout the entire property as a result of Hurricane Irma and will remain closed until further notice.

With the exception of two greater kudu, all of the zoo’s animals survived the storm. There is extensive exhibit damage throughout the zoo and many animals are unable to go back on exhibit without significant repairs, officials said.

The botanicals throughout the property have also suffered serious damage and the zoo has lost many of its historical trees and plants.

Staff and volunteers are on site working to repair damage and continue to give the best possible care to our animals. The Zoo is still without power at this time. The zoo does have water on site for the animals.

Arborists from Davey Tree is helping with recovery efforts. They arrived quickly after the storm and another team from Ohio arrived Thursday.

Many members of the community have asked how they can help:

* Officials are still assessing the full extent of the damages and do not yet know what the cost will be to repair the extensive damage. Maintaining your membership when it’s time to renew, will help Zoo keepers and staff know that the zoo your support through this difficult time.

* Words of encouragement are also much appreciated. Keepers and staff check the Facebook page often and they love seeing all of the positive comments. This has been a hard time for keepers and staff and they greatly appreciate the support from the community and friends from all over the world.
