Sundial Beach Resort & Spa to host second annual USTA sanctioned tournament
After a successful turn out last year, Sundial Beach Resort & Spa will hold their second annual Florida Clay Court Championships Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
Last year, the event attracted 64 participants. This year, they’re expecting to have around 80 players. So far, the resort has entrants coming from as far as Colorado and California to play in the tournament.
“It’s a great tennis tournament and it’s at a fabulous facility,” said Christian Clark, director of tennis at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa.
In addition to being named “Best full-service resort on the island,” for the past four years, Sundial has also been voted “Best Tennis” on Sanibel and Captiva Islands for the last two years.
“(Sundial) has a long-standing tradition of great tournaments in the ’80s and ’90s. We’re trying to get back to where that tradition left off,” said Sean Warren, tennis program coordinator at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa.
The USTA sanctioned event categories include men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles for age divisions 30s, 40s, and 50s as well as men’s and women’s singles and doubles NTRP rated division 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0. The event is open to USTA members 18 and over.
“Everyone is guaranteed to play at at least two matches,” Warren said. “Players will receive points based on how they do in the tournament.”
The resort is offering special rate for players participating in the event. During the tournament weekend, players and their families have the option of booking a fully-equipped island suite or studio condominium, which sleeps up to four for $159 per night. The rate includes breakfast for two and a waived resort fee.
The accommodations also include access to resort activities, five pools, a full-service spa and complimentary bikes, paddle boards, kayaks and beach umbrellas. Reservations can be made at sundialresort.com.
On Saturday, Sept. 30, the resort will host a player’s party at 6 p.m. in the Waterview Room. Awards etched by glass artist Luc Century will be given out that night.
“It’s a thank you to the players for participating,” Clark said.
Players can register with USTA Tennis Link, tournament #150028917. The cost is $54.20 for first singles and $39.15 for first doubles. Registrants are able to play in more than one division.
Players have until Sept. 27 to register.
Sponsors for this year’s tournament include: R.L.R. Investments, Royal Shell Real Estate, Port Sanibel Marina, Coastal Outfitters, Sanibel Captiva Community Bank, Sanibel Captiva Islander and Bailey’s Marketplace. Kay Casperson Lifestyle Spa & Boutique will be providing gift bags for all the players.
