Breakfast is arguably one of the best meals of the day, especially on the weekend. The restaurants below offer everything from sauteed gator to your basic bacon and eggs. What’s better? Most of the restaurants serve breakfast well into the afternoon.
* Lighthouse Cafe
Mike Billheimer, owner of Lighthouse Cafe, said one of the things that has contributed to his 30 years of success on the island is consistency.
“Location has a lot to do with it but also consistency with staff. Many of them have been here for 20-plus years,” Billheimer said. “We’ve had many generations of customers keep coming back.”
Some of Billheimer’s most popular breakfast items are his french toast, eggs benedict and hot cakes. In season, he said he serves on average, over 600 plates a day for breakfast. * Sanibel Cafe
The Sanibel Cafe, which is in the Tahitian Gardens Plaza, has been island staple since 1984. Owner Richard McCurry has been a Sanibel resident since 1976. Some of the cafe’s most popular items are the Original Islander which consists of sauteed gator, two eggs, hash browns and toast and the Sanibel Omelet which is filled with sauteed shrimp, herbs, onions and Havarti cheese.
“Almost everything is made from scratch,” McCurry said.

* Sanibel Deli & Coffee Factory
Locals have flocked to the Sanibel Deli & Coffee Factory since owner Jeff Weigel opened the establishment nine years ago. Michael Binkowski, who works at the restaurant said their No.1 top selling breakfast item are egg sandwiches. Not far behind, is their three-egg omelet. * Blue Giraffe
At Blue Giraffe, everything is made fresh daily.
“I make the biscuits every day,” said Flavia Letendre, who works with her husband owner Jeff Letendre at the restaurant.
Their most popular items include the Sanibel Scramble which is a veggie’s lovers dream. It’s comprised of scrambled eggs, mushrooms, spinach and cheddar cheese on top of an English muffin. For a side, you can pick either home fries or grits. The other two popular items which are reminiscent of their home state of Texas are their Food Truck Tacos and Chicken & Biscuits. The Over Easy Cafe is another hot spot that offers breakfast all day. Trasi Sharpe, who co-owns the restaurant with Liza Klouse, said their top-selling breakfast item is their Nova Smoked Salmon Benedict.
