Sanibel Pilates, Yoga & Dance holds workshop for beginning yogis
For those who are just starting out, or for those who are just interested in taking up yoga, Sanibel Pilates, Yoga & Dance will hold a “new to yoga” workshop Oct. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. inside Studio B on 975 Rabbit Road. The cost is $25 per person.
The workshop will explore two main components of yoga: breath control and posture.
“We’ll be going over not just the physical part of yoga but also breath work and the mind and body connection with yoga,” said Debbie Sheme, owner of Sanibel Dance, Pilates & Yoga. “It’s for anyone who doesn’t know anything about yoga or wants to deepen their own yoga practice. It’s a good event to come to for that.”
Sheme said the workshop is being held in conjunction with her 200 hour yoga teacher training certification class that takes place Oct. 14-29.
“I’m having this workshop with the ladies that are in training to teach them and teach the clients that come to this workshop in October really what yoga is,” Sheme said. “It will teach them how to run a workshop. It’s open to the public as well.”
After the workshop is over, Sheme will recommend which yoga class to take based on each participant’s needs.
Sheme, whose studio is entering its third year on the island, started doing yoga in the ’90s.
“With yoga, I didn’t completely submerge myself and practice until my mom got sick with breast cancer. Once my mom got sick I started going to meditation and yoga nidra classes. From there, I realized yoga was such a great tool for health issues and for anxiety and depression in general. That was the one piece of the puzzle that was missing,” Sheme said.
In time, Sheme and her husband, Mark flew to Aegina, Greece to become certified yoga instructors.
“Yoga impacted me so much that I wanted to take it to the next level to be able to share it with other people,” Sheme said.
