Monthly potluck set for this evening
This month’s potluck dinner at the Community House focuses on Indian dishes. From 6 to 8 p.m. today, Reggie Mathai, owner of Island Pharmacy, will discuss his family’s heritage and different types of Indian dishes.
“We’re really going to be focused on the ingredients and the different types of spices that go into it. We’ll also be looking at the health aspects,” Mathai said. “You can choose pre-processed items or pre-made items, but then you have to look at the true nutritional value that comes from all these different things. You have to weigh in how we can live better, eat better and still enjoy the food that we eat.”
Mathai will also discuss food interactions with medications and answer any questions attendees have.
“There’s some medications where don’t want to have, say, grapefruit. That’s a big thing that jumps out all the time. If they’re on blood thinners, they have to be cautious of different types of greens too,” Mathai said.
For the potluck, Mathai will bring appetizer samples and a meal item. As far as cooking goes, Mathai said he’s been tweaking and experimenting with dishes for as long as he can remember.
“Sometimes I look at it and say ‘How can it be better?’ Sometimes I look at it and don’t even want to mess with it. I’m into the bold, jumpy flavors. I’m not into the bland,” he said.
Attendees are asked to bring something to drink and a dish – it can be an appetizer, soup, salad, entree or dessert that serves six people.
