Author Nancy Zimmerman visits Sanibel for inspiration
Nancy Zimmerman, began her “Sadie’s Great Adventures” series last year. The author met her main character, Sadie, completely by chance.
Zimmerman first met Sadie’s grandmother, Denise, through a game on Facebook. The two eventually became friends. Not long after, Zimmerman met Denise’s granddaughter, Sadie.
“About a year ago, Sadie sent me a message on Facebook that said ‘My mum said you’re a writer, will you write me a book?’ I had been thinking about a children’s book and I wanted to keep it for younger kids,” Zimmerman said.
Zimmerman accepted the challenge and began writing the series for Sadie, who lives in Scotland with her family. The books are aimed for children ages 3-8.
“They’re a story as well as a coloring book,” Zimmerman said.
So far, Zimmerman has three installments in her “Sadie’s Great Adventures” series which includes “Sadie and Lexie,” “Sadie and Lexie Rescue Chloe” and “Sadie’s New Friends.” Her latest installment “Sadie Goes To Sanibel” is in the works.
“All of the kids are real kids in the book,” Zimmerman said. “It’s been a fun series to write.”
Zimmerman is using her trip to Sanibel to write the story and to make sure she has the illustrations. The book will depict scenes from noted Sanibel locations like the lighthouse, Jerry’s and The Island Cow. All of the books are illustrated by Rebekah Raffield.
Zimmerman has been coming down to Sanibel for the last 15 years. Her love of the island was her inspiration behind the book which will come out next May.
“To have a beach location seemed like the natural thing to do,” she said.
Zimmerman, who’s from Anderson, Indiana, made a point to make the series learning-based. The print is larger in each book so it’s easier for children to read.
The fourth book “Sadie Meets A Monarch” will come out in September. Zimmerman plans to have six books in the series.
The series can be found online at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, booksamillion.com, indiebound.org and hudsonbooksellers.com. Each book is $7.99. For more information on Zimmerman, go to nzbestself.com.
