Summer programs for youth at the Sanibel Recreation Center have begun including one of the Optimist supported and popular fishing programs, “Junior Anglers.

The Sanibel Recreation Center staff and Optimist Club counselors take 20 fourth and fifth grade students fishing once a week for nine to 11 weeks to show them the fun of fishing. Fishing trips use several shore areas, as well as two boat trips. At the end of the summer, a picnic is provided for all of the kids and for their Sanibel Recreation Center and Optimist Club counselors.

Fourth and fifth grade students who would like to become Junior Anglers must first be enrolled in the Rec summer program. Apply at the Rec Center on Sanibel Captiva Road or call the Rec at 239-472-0345. Major providers to the fishing program include Bailey’s General Store and Tarpon Bay Explorers.

In addition, the Optimist Club is maintaining six four-year college scholarships for local high school graduates, currently $2,000 per year for each student. Funds for scholarships, F.I.S.H., summer Rec programs, and other charitable functions are provided by club fundraisers that include: the Wine and Food Fest “Sanibel Uncorked,”the 4th of July Road Rally, the Island Traditions drawing for numerous meal coupons from fine island restaurants, numerous 50-50 raffles, and the hugely successful “Blues and Jazz Fest,” held in November.

The San-Cap Optimist club is a 501c3 nonprofit charitable organization. Donations are welcome at: PO Box 1370, Sanibel; or call Stan Howard at 239-472-0836. Also visit www.sancapoptimist.org.
