The Cape Coral Police Department is investigating a serious traffic crash overnight that claimed one life and temporarily shut down Santa Barbara Boulevard at the intersection of Trafalgar Parkway.

At approximately 1:17 a.m., Cape police responded to the intersection for a crash involving a motorcycle and a Chevrolet Camaro. The motorcyclist was killed; the driver and passengers in the Camaro were unhurt.

The driver of the motorcycle was Joshua Robert Williams, 21, of Cape Coral.

According to the CCPD report, the accident occurred when Williams was riding a black 1995 Honda Nighthawk 750 motorcycle south on Santa Barbara at a high speed approaching Trafalgar.

The second vehicle, a black 2011 Chevrolet Camaro being driven by Matthew Dylan Garrett, 18, also of Cape Coral, had stopped for a red light in one of the two turn lanes in the eastbound lanes of Trafalgar. When the light turned green, he attempted to pull through the intersection.

That’s when, police said, Williams lost control of his motorcycle and it came down on its right side. Williams became separated from the motorcycle, which slid past the front of the Camaro, and slid down the center lane of Santa Barbara, colliding with the left front corner of the vehicle and passing underneath the front bumper.

Williams was wearing a helmet and eye protection at the time of the crash.

It is not known if alcohol is a factor in the traffic crash.
