Bicyclist critically injured in Del Prado crash
An investigation into an accident that left a 69-year-old bicyclist critically injured Friday continued through the weekend.
Cape Coral Police responded to the SUV vs. bicycle crash in the 4400 block of Del Prado Boulevard S. at 10:45 p.m.
The bicyclist, identified as Roary R. O’Rourke, of Cape Coral, suffered life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted to a local hospital.
Due to the severity of injuries, the Major Crash Investigator responded to the scene. Victim Advocate and Forensic personnel also responded to assist, officials said in a release issued Saturday.
“The investigation revealed that the crash was alcohol-related and that O’Rourke was not wearing a helmet,” the release states. “The investigation is ongoing.”
The SUV was traveling north on Del Prado Boulevard S approaching the intersection with Southeast 44th Street, and entered the center median turn lane to turn west onto Southeast 44th Street, police reported.
“The bicyclist was traveling in the wrong direction, cycling east on SE 44th Street in the center of the westbound lane,” according to the release.
As the SUV turned left onto Southeast 44th Street, the bicycle collided with the front of the vehicle and O’Rourke struck the hood and windshield.
The driver of Vehicle 1 was not injured. O’Rourke suffered life threatening injuries and was trauma alerted to a local hospital.
“The bicyclist was found to have a medical BAC of .157,” the report states.
The bicycle was equipped with a working headlight and taillight. The bicycle rider was not wearing a safety helmet.
