Seahawk Sprint for Music 5K steps off Saturday

By Staff | May 5, 2017

A 5K planned for this weekend will help support a high school band in Cape Coral.

The third annual Seahawk Sprint for Music 5K will take place on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Cape Coral High School stadium, with registration open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. There will also be a one-mile fun run for youth. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Cape Coral High School Band program.

Band director Stacey Green explained that the fundraiser helps to pay for the cost of necessities that the school does not cover, like instrument repairs, competition fees, dry cleaning for uniforms and more.

“We have a lot of things that the band pays for out of our own pockets,” she said. “So this will really help with that.”

Last year, approximately 90 people took part in the event.

“We were able to raise just a little over $3,000 for the band,” Green said.

This year, the band is hoping to have even higher numbers.

“Anything above and beyond what we had last year in terms of profit would be wonderful,” she said.

“Our runner number, our goal, is to have 150 (people),” Green added. “Of course, anything beyond that would be absolutely fantastic.”

On Saturday, the 5K route will start on the north side of the stadium and run past the high school. According to Green, the route will wind through some of the school’s nearby neighborhoods.

“It is a very flat and fast course,” she said.

“People are welcome to walk the event,” Green added.

Throughout the course, band members will cheer on the participants.

“I like to have the students spread out over the course as much as I can,” she said, noting that she takes part in runs regularly. “It’s really motivating to turn the corner and see someone cheering for you.”

At 8:30 a.m., the one-mile Kids Fun Run will kick off.

“Each of the kids that finishes will receive a participation ribbon and an ice pop,” Green said.

The first, second and third place finishers will be recognized.

The 5K race will be timed by 3D Racing Inc.

Awards will be given to the overall male and overall female, as well as top male and female: Masters, ages 40 and over; Grandmasters, ages 50 and over; and Senior Grandmasters, ages 60 and over.

“They will receive a gift card from Monarca’s restaurant,” she said.

First, second and third place will also be recognized in age groups for the males and females: ages 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60 and over.

“They receive a medal,” Green said.

The registration fee for the 5K is $35 for adults and $25 for ages 18 and under.

It includes post-race breakfast and drinks, along with a Dri-FIT event shirt

Open to ages 12 and under, the Kids Fun Run is $10 per child.

Green encouraged the public to sign up.

“It’s a very friendly community-centered event,” she said. “Families come out.”
