Registation under way for MDA Muscle Walk

By Staff | Apr 28, 2017

Registrations are being taken for an event to help those with muscle-debilitating diseases.

Organized by the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southwest Florida, the annual MDA Muscle Walk of Fort Myers will take place on May 6 at 6 p.m. at the Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers.

Executive Director Erin Randall explained that the annual event raises awareness of and funds for children and adults in the local community with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases.

“It stays here for our families that live with muscle-debilitating diseases and ALS,” she said.

“It funds local direct services that we provide to them,” Randall added.

It is the seventh year that the walk has been held.

“Our families were looking for an event to do,” she said. “Something they could be a part of.”

Last year, about 200 people participated in the walk.

“This year, we’re looking for about the same,” Randall said.

Approximately $62,000 was raised in 2016.

“With this year’s event, we’re looking to raise about $65,000,” she said.

Register day of starting at 5:30 p.m. or in advance at: www.musclewalkmda.org/fortmyers.

There is no cost to participate, but fundraising is encouraged.

“It’s free to get involved and take part,” Randall said.

She noted that participants typically fundraise leading up to the event.

“Day of we have different opportunities to donate, as well,” Randall said.

People are welcome to donate when they register.

“We’ll have a few different raffles going on,” she said. “We have tribute balloons.”

Entertainment will be provided by a deejay.

“We have face painting,” Randall said.

More than a dozen vendors, including local resources and businesses, will also be on hand.

Light refreshments and snacks will be available.

“It’s just a big party,” she said.

The walk takes part at the end of the event.

“We kind of use it as a victory lap,” Randall said.

The route is designed for all ages and abilities, including wheelchairs and equipment.

“Anybody can take part in the walk,” she said. “It’s a smaller walk.”

More than 140 Muscle Walk events are expected to take place throughout the United States this year. Last year, participants raised $8 million; over $33.8 million has been raised since it began in 2011.

Randall encouraged the public to come out and take part.

“It’s a great opportunity to raise awareness out in the community,” she said.
