Tom Uhler to teach course at Community House

Forty years ago Tom Uhler decided to purchase his first bottles of wine, which were taken to a friend’s house, so they would develop a palate of their tastes.

Years later, after taking a cooking class one night, it dawned on him that “we needed a wine class in Fort Myers.” From there, Wines One, an introduction to the enjoyment of fine wines, was offered during a three-part Friday night program.

“I still have my original notebook from that,” class, Uhler said.

Many individuals who have taken the course have shared that they enjoy wine much more after taking the class.

The class is now being offered at the Sanibel Community House from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 5, 12 and 26. The class is open to 40 participants and is $135 per person. Although the classes are designed to have information flow from one class to the next, he said each class can stand on its own feet.

“I’m going to make it fun. If you are not having fun it’s your fault,” Uhler said. “My goal is to get people to come to all three weeks. They will walk away with a lot of confidence they never had before.”

The participants will learn such things as why red wines taste different from white, what the shape of a wine bottle tells a consumer, why a wine rack in the kitchen is the worst place to store wine, how to read a wine bottle, and what foods go with what wines. Participants will have the opportunity to taste wines, as well as food catered by Sanibel Catering Company by Baileys.

“I try to take the mystery out of it,” Uhler said.

The classes, he said are being offered to benefit the Community House.

“All of the proceeds are to benefit the Community House. I’m excited to be doing something for the Community House. It’s an integral part of the community. It’s a natural thing to be doing there,” he said.

The Sanibel Community House is at 2173 Periwinkle Way. For additional information, or to register, call (239) 472-2155, or visit www.sanibelcommunityhouse.net.

Uhler is a long-time member of the Society of Wine Educators.
