Bicyclist fatally injured

A bicyclist who traveled into the path of a Cape Coral driver was struck and killed.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Jonathan M. Steele, 42, of the Cape, was driving a Dodge Magnum southbound on U.S. 17 at about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday. At the same time, Holly A. Palombo, 42, of Zolfo Springs, was riding a bicycle southbound on U.S. 17 in the right lane, just north of CR 660.

As Steele approached the bicycle from behind, Palombo traveled into his vehicle’s path.

The front right of the Dodge collided into the rear of the bicycle in the southbound lane, according to the FHP. Palombo was separated from the bicycle and came to a final rest in the southbound lane.

Palombo was transported to DeSoto Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The FHP reported that she sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

Palombo was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Steele was reportedly not injured.

The accident remains under investigation, according to the FHP.
