Registration open for Cape Coral’s Charity Golf Extravaganza

Cape Chorale, one of the city’s most popular vocal groups, has scheduled a golf tournament to raise funds to support the group’s many community activities.

The 2nd Charity Golf Extravaganza is set for Saturday, Oct. 29, at River Hall Country Club. The foursome scramble format tournament tees off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. followed by an awards luncheon.

The golf event is one of Cape Chorale’s three major annual fundraisers along with its Cabaret event in November and the Annual Show in January.

Cape Chorale has a fundraising partner in the tournament in the Lee Memorial Children’s Speech Therapy Program, which has received more than $30,000 in donations from the group over the years.

“We think that speech therapy is important,” said music and performance vice president John Pennington. “I don’t think we’ve ever donated less than $1,000 to them, usually more.”

The group also is asking for non-perishable food donations at the tournament to be given to the Harry Chapin Food Bank through the Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church’s food donation program. Cape Chorale recently relocated its rehearsal venue to that church.

Cape Chorale, a group of 40 performers, gives back to the community through its appearances at community events like tree lightings, the Southwest Florida Military Museum, local nonprofits, youth groups and many others.

“I’m amazed at how much good is going on in the world right now,” said Pennington. “We try to make the community a better place and put a smile on faces with a song.”

Pennington has put together golf events for many years for many organizations before starting this one for Cape Chorale, which belongs to the Barbershop Harmony Society.

“We have a good time, sell some sponsorships and even sing a little while we’re there,” Pennington said. “We raise funds to pay the bills and buy uniforms and things.”

The entry fee to play golf is $75 per person (limit 100) online at capechorale.org. There are prizes at the four par-3 holes with the big one being a two-year lease of a vehicle provided by Scanlon Automotive Group if a hole-in-one is scored at hole No. 16.
