‘Seussical The Musical’ to open Cultural Park’s 2016/2017 season

By Staff | Aug 26, 2016

“Seussical The Musical” will be performed at the Cultural Park Theatre Sept. 9 through 18 and will feature a cast of 48 performers.

This fantastical, family musical is based on the books of Dr. Seuss and includes many whimsical characters such as Horton, the elephant, the Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, the Sour Kangaroo, the Whos of Whoville, and more.

Horton hears a noise coming from a speck of dust on a clover and commits himself to protecting it and the Whos who live on it. Through mishaps and adventures, these unique characters take the audience on a wild, musical adventure.

“This show is a classic theater piece,” said Tyler Young, Seussical director.

“I’m thrilled for audiences to see this incredibly talented cast and see the imagination of Dr. Seuss come alive on stage. With a cast of 48-plus talented, young performers ranging in age from 10 to 35, this show has a little something for everyone in the family. Over 90 young performers came from all over Lee County to participate in auditions.

The show itself is “a mash-up of Seuss’ work,” set to a storyline similar to “Horton Hears a Who,” which involves such characters as Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird and the Cat in the Hat.

Though September production has always been geared toward our youth department featuring junior and school productions, this year’s full-length production pulls in a number of adult leads who carry the song-based show. By putting a larger-size family musical on stage, we look to draw more people from the area into the experience, something that is not always possible with smaller productions.

And happily, this still gives our amazingly talented kids and newcomers an opportunity to be in a show.

Cultural Park is happy to open its 54th Season this year with Seussical. Following will continue with one of our most exciting seasons ever with productions to include “All Shook UP,” Hairspray,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “Don’t Dress for Dinner,” “The Porch” and many more.
