An SUV slammed into a south Cape Coral home Friday night, causing extensive damage.

Gregory Fischer, 43, of 5514 S.W. 12th Ave., was driving south on Skyline Boulevard at a high rate of speed when he drove through the stop sign at El Dorado Parkway and crashed into the front of a house at 800 El Dorado Parkway W., according to Cape Coral police.

The residents were not home. There were no injuries.

Several neighbors, including interim Chief of Police Dave Newlan, walked to the crash scene to assist and Newlan detained Fischer until patrol officers arrived.

Fischer, who police say could not perform field sobriety evaluations, was arrested and charged with DUI and DUI with property damage.

The residents were notified and the building inspector responded to assess the damage to the home.
