Discover Cape Coral Parks & Rec

By Staff | Jul 14, 2016

Learn about the recreational opportunities available in Cape Coral during an event Saturday.

Hosted by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Discover Parks and Recreation Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The entire event is free to the public.

“We want to bring all of our different facilities together in one location,” recreation specialist Jennifer Bice said, adding that the event helps to promote the department’s facilities and programs.

“There’s something for everyone, for all different ages,” she added.

In 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association declared that July is National Park and Recreation Month. This marks the 31st anniversary that the nation celebrates the month.

At Discover Parks and Recreation Day, visitors can learn about the facilities, divisions and programs within the department, as well as enjoy several demonstrations and a range of activities for all.

There will be representatives from the senior centers, Four Freedoms Park, Rotary Park, youth center, Coral Oaks Golf Course, city’s Special Events Division, arts studio, Special Populations and more.

“Everyone’s kind of doing their own thing at their own tables,” Bice said.

There will be a photo booth, free ice cream and popcorn, and even live animals.

“There’s also going to be kids crafts,” she said.

“There’s a whole variety of things that will be going on,” Bice added.

There will be live entertainment provided the main stage, as well as dance, karate, volleyball and synchronized swim demonstrations, even some line dancing and paddle board instruction.

“People can take like a little mini-lesson and learn how to paddle board,” she said.

Prize drawings will be held every 30 minutes throughout the day.

“There’ll also be food trucks,” Bice said.

Kreips & Juices, Kona Ice and Bubba’s Roadhouse & Saloon will be on hand.

Last year, an estimated 600 people turned out for the event.

“Parks and recreation is such a big part of the community,” she said. “We just want to let people know all the great things we offer – we offer things for all ages, and there’s such a wide variety.”

“We really want people to come out and learn more about what we do,” Bice added.
