MacIntosh Books, in Palm Ridge Place, was one of the 250 independent bookstores in the country chosen by Candlewick Press to participate in the Find Waldo Local scavenger hunt. To participate, individuals need to pick up a passport at the bookstore.

“The idea is not only to have fun and do this scavenger hunt, but also to connect kids with their community and get them to notice businesses in their community that they might not have noticed before. It’s really just this idea of bringing kids and the community together and also the fun celebration of their fun Waldo series,” said Rebecca Binkowski, manager.

Each passport contains a list of 25 businesses on the island that are participating. Once they find Waldo, they can have their passport signed or stamped. Passports were available June 15 but the search lasts throughout July. So far, a dozen children have signed up.

According to Binkowski, it didn’t take her long to find businesses that were willing to participate.

“It’s been going great. It takes a minute to explain to stores how they’ll be involved, the first question I usually get is what do I have to do? And then once they understand it’s just a fun scavenger hunt, and you’re just placing Waldo in your store and kids are coming in and looking for him, they think oh of course, I’d love to participate,” Binkowski said.

The most difficult thing she came across was being allowed to pick only 25 stores. Binkowski tried to keep the businesses diverse, but at the same time, close in radius to each other so parents can walk or bike with their children.

“Most of our businesses are concentrated to Palm Ridge and Tarpon Bay then up Periwinkle,” she said.

Ten stamps will get participants a button and a $1 off coupon.

Those who collect 20 stamps or more will receive a button and a coupon and be entered into a grand prize drawing for a six-volume deluxe set of Waldo books on July 29 from 4 to 6 p.m.

For those who complete the coloring sheet and tag it on Instagram with #ColorWaldoAndWin, will be entered to win a Waldo prize pack valued at over $150.
