South Seas Island Resort has limited occupancy for their annual 4th of July weekend, which is slam packed with activities for the family to enjoy.

The resort held a 4th of July celebration every year before Hurricane Charley impacted the area. This year marks the third year since implementing the celebration post hurricane.

South Seas Island Resort Marketing Communication Manager Adelie Landis said they offer multiple special events for their guests who decide to spend the long 4th of July weekend at the resort.

“It’s just one big party weekend. It’s impossible not to enjoy yourself,” she said.

The slew of activities kick off with the 8th annual Hot Dog Eating Contest at 12 p.m. Friday, July 1.

“That is the signature event for that day,” Landis said.

The event is divided into groups: youth (ages 7-12), teens (ages 13-17) and adults (18 and older). The admission for the contest is included in the resort fee. The competition will be held at the overlook at the Pointe Restaurant, Resort Pool Complex, North Pointe.

Landis said the contest resembles a pie eating contest as contestants sit down at a table and see how many hot dogs they can eat. A pre-determined number of hot dogs will be given to those who participate.

On Friday, a Home Run Derby will be held at 5 p.m. The derby will be held at the West Lawn, North Pointe for the classic family challenge. Prizes will be awarded for each age group and admission for the derby is included in resort fees.

The day will end with Seaside Cinema and s’mores at King’s Crown Lawn at North Pointe. The featured film “Zootopia” will begin at 9 p.m. Landis said the film will be shown on a big screen outdoors while families enjoy making s’mores.

The festivities continue Saturday, July 2, with the Golf Cart Scavenger Hunt at noon. She said the hunt is a combination of challenges, puzzles, collecting items and photographs around the South Seas property.

From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Go! Fish Tournament will be held at the T-Dock. The tournament provides both kids and their families with the opportunity to fish for $25 per fisherman. The entry fee includes all the equipment needed. Prizes will be awarded for smallest and largest fish, as well as the first caught fish and the most caught fish.

Saturday will end with Casino Night from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Captiva Conference Center at the South Village. Participants can test their luck at such games as blackjack, craps and poker. Prizes will be given to the winners.

The signature event for the entire weekend takes place Sunday, July 3, with the Star Spangled Celebration. The celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. with the Patriotic Golf Cart Parade leaving the Captiva Conference Center, South Village at 6:30 p.m. The golf cart parade departs from the South Village and travels down Plantation Road ending at the West Lawn and Sunset Beach.

Prizes are given for the three best decorated golf carts.

“People decorate them in all sorts of fun and crazy, corky ways,” Landis said. “People love watching it and being in it. They feel like little celebrities.”

A variety of activities – live music, children’s activities, fair style booths, face painting, games, food and drinks await the guests participating in the golf cart parade at Sunset Beach. The Star Spangled Celebration runs until 10 p.m.

“At the end of the night we have fireworks at 9 p.m. People can watch fireworks straight from the beach,” Landis said. “It frames up the end of the weekend very nicely.”

She said that guests can also watch the fireworks aboard Captiva Cruises for an additional cost. The boat leaves the docks at 7:45 p.m. and comes back at 9:45 p.m.

The final event of the weekend is the Red, White & Boom Pool Party from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, July 4. The party will include entertainment, children’s activities, family style games and poolside competitions.

“It’s something fun to finish off the weekend with,” she said.

In addition to the activities, South Seas Island Resort is also giving away a three day, two night stay through their social media contest. Landis said guests who post photos of them enjoying the Fourth of July festivities from July 1, through July 5 with #SSIRJuly42016 and #SouthSeas will be entered to win.

“We did it last year and it went off without a hitch. People loved it,” she said.
