10th Annual Cape Cops 5K this Saturday
Proceeds from an upcoming 5K will benefit the families of fallen law enforcement officers.
Hosted by the Cape Coral Police Department, the 10th Annual Cape Cops 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run will be held Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m.
Anella “Joy” Nyack, community outreach coordinator for the Cape police, explained that the annual event corresponds each year with National Police Week, which falls during the week of May 15.
“The proceeds that we receive will go to the families of officers fallen or injured in the line of duty,” she said. “It’s just raising money in general for them and showing our support.”
The advanced entry fees are $15 for ages 18 and under or $25 for adults on or before Friday.
The registration fee day-of is $35 for all ages.
Participants will receive a T-shirt and goody bag, along with a participation medal.
Nyack noted that it is the first year for the participation medals.
“As long as you cross the finish line,” she said. “You will get a medal.”
The Kids Fun Run, which will take place after the 5K, is a free event for youth ages 12 and under.
Awards will be handed out to the top male and female overall, masters, grandmasters and senior grandmasters winners, as well as to the top male and female winners in multiple age groups.
“It’s a fun race,” Nyack said. “It’s a beautiful scenic view. It’s by the water.”
Last year, approximately 300 people registered to take part.
Package pickup will be held Friday from noon to 6 p.m. at the CCPD or day-of at the run.
