The 10 year anniversary of the Blue Ribbon Golf Classic, which supports the Sanibel School Fund, will take place this Saturday, at the Sanctuary Golf Club.

The golf classic will have a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and a helicopter ball drop at 4:30 p.m. Individuals are asked to stop by the Sanctuary Golf Club by 11:15 a.m. to sign in and register. A special guest appearance by Mayor Kevin Ruane will take place before the shotgun start and Danny Morgan will provide the music during the event.

Registration for individual players is $200 and includes golf, heavy hors d’oevres and drinks.

Kim Kouril, with the Sanibel School Fund, said they are excited to host the event, especially since it is for the kids.

The event will also provide the opportunity to win a Lexus by making a hole-in-one, as well as a chance to bid on live auction items. Those items include a catered dinner, brew pub package, helicopter drop seats and a Costa Rican vacation package.

The Sanibel School Fund provides funding for The Sanibel School Spanish teacher Silvia Zavala. Kouril said since the Lee County School District will not fund a Spanish program at the Sanibel School, the Sanibel School Fund pays for Zavala’s salary and benefits.

Zavala began teaching Spanish at The Sanibel School a little more than four years ago. She previously taught at the Children’s Center on the island for five years.

Zavala spends time working with kindergarten through eight grade students throughout the day. She also runs the school’s Spanish Club, which meets twice a month for lunch outdoors and a meeting.

The Sanibel School Fund also provides funding for technology, as well as other educational needs.

Kouril said the Blue Ribbon Golf Classic is held for sustainability of the organization that formed 17 years ago to help The Sanibel School.

Although the golf classic is celebrating its 10th anniversary of being held, it was renamed the “Blue Ribbon” Golf Classic four years ago.
