Working out the body and mind
The best workout an individual can do is one in which addresses each mind, body and soul.
It’s those three components of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in which Sanibel resident and yoga instructor Sacha Edwards teaches to her students.
“Yoga is like a prayer to your body,” Edwards said. “We start off with meditation, which is like connecting yourself with the universe. When you are done, you feel like you can do anything.”
Edwards teaches yoga at the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. She allows her students to arrange their own time, but mostly the one-hour classes are from 8-10 a.m. next to the Dunes’ pool.
“You can hear the bubbles in the pool, the birds chirping and the breeze coming in,” Edwards said. “It’s very healing.”
Edwards practices Hatha yoga, which refers to physical exercises known as asanas or postures. The exercises are designed to align your skin, muscles and bones and open different channels in the body, so energy can flow freely.
Edwards is a native to Florida, by being born in Miami, but was raised in Maui, Hawaii. Her mother was always a “yogi” and that’s where she picked up the art of yoga.
Living on Sanibel and raising five boys keeps her life active, but yoga is a perfect way to balance it all out, she said.
Her mentor on the island has been yoga master Yali Zawady, who owns and operates Ambu Yoga Boutique Studio on Captiva.
“Yali has been a big inspiration to me, she is just a positive ball of energy,” Edwards said.
During the Hatha yoga sessions, students will work on their core workouts, breathing techniques and stretching.
“It’s for the person who doesn’t want to have a hard work out, but a slow flow,” Edwards said. “Anybody can do it, from young kids to senior aged people. It gives you a positive outlook for the entire day.
“It really helps people who have issues with their back, knees and hips.”
Edwards will also offer classes at the Sanibel Beach and Gulf Resort. She teaches cycling interval training at the Sanibel Recreation Center on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 8 a.m., as well as spin classes.
Her classes at the Dunes are $15 for members and $20 for non-members.
