Master Gardners to meet Dec. 3 on Sanibel

Caldwell to lecture on insect and pests of palms and woody ornamentals at Master Gardner series

The 75th Master Gardner lecture series will be held at the Sanibel Library Thursday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m.

The speaker will be Doug Caldwell, PhD. and his topic will deal with the top insect and disease pests of palms and woody ornamentals using integrated pest management (IPM) approaches to protect the home landscapes, which means no spraying.

Dr. Caldwell is an expert in entomology (insects) and internationally certified arborist and director of the University of Florida extension for Collier County.

He is a nationally recognized Master Horticulturalist with 30 years of experience and a prolific author and speaker with over 50 published papers over the past decade.

During his distinguished career, he has appeared in hundreds of public programs, television programs and newspaper articles.

Dr. Caldwell has identified 11 new significant pests in Lee and Collier Counties and has generated over 50 fact sheets to help local residents to stay current on many issues.

Additionally, he as certified over 1,700 landscapes and 192 companies in the proper use of fertilizers, pesticides and proper pruning techniques. Over one third of his 30 different programs have also been conducted in Spanish to increase the number of Hispanic workers certified from 18 to 196.

Dr. Caldwell presents his programs with a sense of humor and high definition digital images and take home material will be provided.

The program is free and open to the public.
