CCFD looking for charity toy drive partners

By Staff | Oct 2, 2015

The Cape Coral Fire Department is looking for charities to partner with for its toy drive.

For more than 20 years, the department has been able to provide gifts to Cape children during the holidays with the help of citizens, volunteers and businesses. Last year, over 750 toys for youth of all ages were collected at the city’s 10 fire stations. Charities help distribute them to families in need.

“We have all these toys, but not necessarily the people to distribute them,” Andrea Schuch, from the Cape fire department, said. “We want to be able to help kids have the best Christmas possible.”

Last year, the CCFD partnered up with two charities to give out the toys.

“We donated gifts to over 200 children,” she said.

Charities interested in receiving toys collected during this year’s drive can apply now.

As of Thursday, no organizations had signed up yet.

“It’s open and accepting applications,” Schuch said of the program.

The application is fairly basic, asking for the charity’s contact information, type of organization and mission, scope of work, population served, number of toys requested and desired date to receive them.

“They’re very simple questions,” she said.

Schuch noted that the charity does not have to be based in the Cape, but the families do.

“We want to, mainly, know the toys stay in Cape Coral,” she said, explaining that donors expect the gifts will stay local. “It’s important that they are distributed to families who live in the Cape.”

Applicants will be notified by Oct. 30 of their approval status.

Schuch pointed out that individual families can also apply to receive toys.

“I will have an application for individuals to apply, but that won’t be until November,” she said. “We just haven’t gotten to that step in the process yet.”

The annual drive will kick off on Nov. 27 – Black Friday – and end on Dec. 20.

People can drop off new unwrapped gifts for newborns to age 15 at any Cape fire station.

“Older kids tend to be left out, so we’re always gracious when there’s pre-teen gifts,” Schuch said.

The deadline to apply to be a charity partner is Oct. 23.
