In a surprising development Tuesday, Sanibel Mayor Kevin Ruane has announced to “suspend” his candidacy for Lee County Commission, District 1, “effective immediately.”

Ruane announced his candidacy in front of supporters and friends earlier this summer. He did state in his letter (shown below), that he will continue on as Sanibel Mayor.

Ruane’s letter included:

September 1, 2015

Dear Friends:

First of all, I would like to thank you for your support.

My campaign for Lee County Commissioner has been an extraordinary experience. We are so lucky to be able to live in such a wonderful community and the campaign has certainly confirmed that.

However, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to suspend my candidacy effective immediately.

Due to a recent serious health issue with a family member, I am unable to meet the obligations of the campaign at this time. I did not come to this decision lightly, but as many of you know my family is always my primary responsibility and will continue to be.

I plan to continue on as mayor of Sanibel and look forward to seeing many of you over the coming months.

Also, please know that I will be returning all of my campaign contributions.

Finally, I want to thank all of you again for your support and encouragement during the campaign.
