Faces on Faith: Harness the energy of love

By Staff | Aug 19, 2015

As I cleaned out some files this summer, I came across a newspaper clipping about the meteor that exploded over Siberia in February 2013.

The reporter wrote that it was a blinding flash of light in the heavens that cast unearthly shadows on the gray buildings, and the accompanying sounds almost crippled the human ear.

Untold beauty and indescribable damage. And all of this occurred in the same time frame when hundreds of astronomers were calculating the sighting of the asteroid that actually missed the Earth by over 17,000 miles!

How we continue to comprehend, predict, analyze, and control God’s creation – even trying to ready ourselves for what we think might happen in the heavens around us.

Once again, we were shocked into our ultimate powerlessness by the meteoric explosion in Chelyabinsk.

I am reminded of the beautiful words in an alternate prayer during the worship service: “From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us rulers of creation but we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.”

Teilhard de Chardin once wrote, “someday after mastering winds, waves, tides, and gravity, we shall harness the energies of love, and then, for the second time in the history of the world, man will discover fire.”

Yes, how we have “mastered” so much of God’s creation offered to us, and how we so often have betrayed that trust by turning against God and one another.

When will we comprehend the necessity of harnessing the energy of love? Simple and yet so complex a question – a query we could easily dismiss as an impossible and unrealistic goal – not capable of ever being harnessed -not unlike the predicted paths of meteors.

However, to think we could never harness love and compassion is an egregious error – a flagrant omission of who we are as human beings – no matter our faith base.

After all, the one common denominator of all our faith systems is compassion! For the ultimate survival of this little planet whirling in space, love and compassion must be the energies we expend upon one another.

Energy channelled into anger, revenge, greed, narcissism, or uncivil language or behavior will lead us down the path to entropy and will be as crippling as the sound of the meteor.

All of creation does cry out for us to discover – to create – that fire of love – one person at a time – and such a steep learning curve for so many of us. Whether you ignite a bonfire or a tiny candle is not important.

The importance is the presence of the flame that you light in some way with some person that puts you back on the road to compassion and love and dispels the unearthly shadows of pain.
