Senior Health & Fitness Day at Cape Hospital

By Staff | May 26, 2015

Keeping older Americans healthy and fit is the focus of an event today at the Cape Coral Hospital.

Taking part in the 22nd Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day, Lee Memorial Health System is hosting a free event at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral, as well as the Wellness Center of Fort Myers. Open to the public, it will run from 10 a.m. to noon and feature demonstrations, screenings and more.

The national theme for this year is “If You Keep Moving You’ll Keep Improving!”

“Our community – Cape Coral – is pretty much typically made up of seniors and our working class,” Roxanne Seefloth, member services supervisor of the Wellness Center of Cape Coral, said Tuesday.

“Being the only medically-based facility in this area, we really want to connect with our senior base here,” she said. “We have seniors who are up in their 90s who are still coming three days a week.”

Today, members of the center are invited to bring guests free of charge.

“They can utilize anything we have here in the facility,” Seefloth said, adding that walk-ins are as welcome as guests. “They can actually take a class as well if they come dressed to workout.”

Senior FIT classes, both land and aqua, will be highlighted at the event.

“These are classes that we have throughout the day that are really tailored more for our seniors,” she said. “Stretch and balance, yogalates (yoga and pilates combined), tai chi.”

At 9:50 a.m., the cardio dance class participants will put on a demonstration in the lobby.

“It’s going to be like a flash mob,” Seefloth said. “They’ve worked on a little skit.”

A pickleball demonstration is also planned.

“Apparently, that’s the newest craze among our seniors,” she said.

Free fitness tests will also be available, including a step up fit test for cardiovascular health, chair sit and reach to test flexibility, and an agility and balance test for sensory, motor and cognitive skills.

“We’re going to have several vendor,” Seefloth said.

There will be a massage therapist, early heart attach booth and more.

The Wellness Center of Cape Coral is at 609 S.E. 13th Court.

The center features state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment, group exercise classes, two indoor pools – one lap and one therapy – massage services, a healthy cafe and pro shop, according to officials.
