‘Tis the season for mosquitoes

To the editor:

Yep, it’s that time once again to fire up the foggers, the bombs and the misting systems.

Although, the city and state have a comprehensive program of spraying from the sky, we still feel the need to do our part on ground level.

Some systems (misting systems) actually let your neighbor pay the cost while you reap the benefits. That’s because coastal breezes may carry the mist, err, pesticides, to your side of the lot-line.

However, for those who don’t wish to participate in the 2-for-1 don’t put up a fence or close your windows just yet. The State Agriculture Department is more than willing to do a free Drift Test, just give them a call – (850) 617-7988.

We really need to find out what the Caloosahatchee and Seminole Indians used for a mosquito repellent. Somebody could make a fortune. Remember, they evaded those northern soldiers in the swamps of Florida for years.

Of course, a boring alternative to pesticides could be common sense. Don’t go out at dusk and dawn or dress properly. Don’t sit in the boonies at the beach. If you break out in welts, go to the doctor and get a shot.

Move to Arizona as a last resort.

This man verses mosquito thing has been going on forever. I liken it to the story of David and Goliath and you know the ending there – the little guy won.
