‘Wine & Canvas’ art lessons prove popular

By Staff | Mar 6, 2015

There are a limited number of spots left for the Wine & Canvas event in Cape Coral.

As of Thursday, there were eight seats left for the event, which will take place Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Fletchers Grille & Spirits. The cost is $35 per person and includes all of the supplies needed.

“The most important thing is the concept,” Barb Kohl, co-owner of the local Wine & Canvas, said. “There’s no artistic ability needed. When they instruct the painting, they will go step-by-step.”

“Jellyfish Jive” is the featured painting, with local artist Lorrie Bennett. Attendees will recreate the painting on a 16-by-20 wrapped canvas, which means they will not have to frame it when done.

The canvas, paints, brushes, easels and aprons are all provided.

“Everything to create your painting,” she said.

According to Kohl, 90 percent of their attendees have never painted before.

“They’ll (the artists) teach you how to blend a color, how to drop in a color,” she said. “They’ll teach them the knife edge of the brush, as opposed to the flat part of the brush.”

While the artist is instructing, festive music is usually played in the background.

“We try to encourage socialization and intermingling,” Kohl said. “It’s all about the fun.”

She noted that the events can be addictive.

“We have customers that have come 20 times,” Kohl said.

About 80 percent of the attendees are female.

“It is usually women,” she said. “It’s a perfect girls’ night out type of atmosphere.”

But the ages of the attendees typically vary.

“The age group is 21 to – we’ve had a 91-year-old in there,” Kohl said.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from Fletchers.

“They can register up to the day before the event and day of until noon if there are seats,” she said.
