By Staff | Feb 18, 2015

Discount time is back.

The Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club Diner’s Delight coupon books are available, this year for $35. Discounts for 29 island restaurants are available. Coupons are discounts or buy one/get one for up to $20 at participating island eateries. Proceeds are used for Kiwanis causes, said Jerry Edelman, Diner’s Delight coordinator.

“Everyone benefits,” he said.

Release of the popular booklet is timed to a seasonal tradition of collecting funds to benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Kiwanis scholarship program, the Sanibel Public Library, FISH of Sanibel, other charitable work. The club’s spaghetti dinner fundraiser is planned for Feb. 28 at the Sanibel Community House. Organizers expect some 1,200 islanders and guests for the traditional event.

Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, and became an international organization with the creation of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, the following year. The organization this year celebrates its 100th anniversary.

In the early years, members focused on business networking but in 1919, the organization changed its focus to service. In the 1960s, worldwide expansion was approved and within the decade, Kiwanis International-Europe was formed, representing Kiwanians in 11 European nations. In 1987, women officially were allowed into the membership.

The Kiwanis Club of Sanibel-Captiva Islands was founded in 1973 and has some 100 active members. The Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Foundation, Inc. provides more than $100,000 annually in grants to various community organizations and schools, including $45,000 in scholarships. The Club and Foundation focus their grants on support of island youth.
