‘Touch a Truck’ event seeks vendors, sponsors

By Staff | Jan 15, 2015

Ever go to a car show, and when you happen to see your dream car, the first thing you notice is a sign that reads “Do Not Touch”?

On March 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Southwest Florida Military Museum at 4820 Leonard St. in Cape Coral, children and adults will be able to touch all the trucks the parking lot will allow during the first “Touch a Truck” event.

But to make it a truly special event, beside the charitable aspect, vendors and a main sponsor are still being sought.

“The kids will be able to honk the horn, touch the wheels and explore,” said Fran Marcino, organizer for the event. “So far we have a fire truck, the Cape Coral Police Mobile Command Unit, a GATOR truck that helps with brush fires, and a Lee transit bus.”

There also will be several Army Jeeps and a Swanson’s refrigerator truck in case people want to cool off, Marcino said, adding that she’s looking into getting a SWAT vehicle.

“Things are just starting to get rolling now, so it’s just the beginning,” Marcino said. “It will be a lot of fun for the family.”

Net proceeds from the event will go toward children with Fragile X Syndrome, a genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, behavioral and mental health issues, and developmental and language delays.

In fact, the event was inspired by Marcino’s 3-year-old grandson, Ethan, who loves trucks and has Fragile X.

“His X chromosome is mutated over 200 times. It’s a full mutation that affects everything,” Marcino said. “It’s unusual for the museum to do anything like this.”

All participants will receive a truck “passport,” and can visit the designated locations for a chance to win a prize. Parent supervision is required, and cameras are a must.

Tickets will be available for children’s activities such as a duck pond, face painting, and crafts and also for a charity basket raffle.

There also will be a stage with entertainment geared toward children of all ages.

The South Cape Hospitality and Entertainment Group is promoting the event.

Health and safety exhibitors, local vendors and sponsors, especially main ones, are being sought.

“The vendors are doing better than the sponsors. We’re getting ‘little’ sponsors, but that’s it,” Marcino said. “For a title sponsor we were going to have construction hats for the kids and put their sticker on the front.”

Admission will be free and parking will be available at the Club Square, Iguana Mia, and Winn-Dixie parking lots.

The Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library is at 4820 Leonard St., Cape Coral. Sponsor and venfor information may be found on the event Facebook page:
