PAWS to say thank you

By Staff | Dec 24, 2014

To the editor:

The Protection of Animal Welfare Society, Inc., PAWS, would like to take this opportunity thank all our friends here on Sanibel, Capitva and visitors too, who have generously donated financially, and with their time, to help us care for our injured, sick and abandoned animals during 2014. We’d like to thank Coral Veterinary Hospital for not only providing for the medical needs of our animals, but, in some instances, showing them to clients at their hospital in Fort Myers, and finding them wonderful homes.

Our island newspapers are especially kind to us for donating space in their newspapers that include pictures and stories of our animals and can be very helpful in finding homes, and also getting us needed attention to raise funds to keep PAWS alive here on the islands.

Again in 2014, the Center 4 Life hosted another Justine Smith Memorial Bridge Tournament and donated the proceeds to PAWS. We were one of Justine’s favorite charities. We thank our many local businesses that allow our PAWS Jars to sit on their counters, so that folks can drop in their donations. Bailey’s General Store, H2O at Jerry’s Center, Huxter’s Market and Deli, Island Paws, are some of our local shops that help in this effort. Without the ongoing support and help from our community, we would not have the necessary funds to continue to provide medical attention, temporary homes, and other care for our animals here on our islands. Our animals don’t go to the local animal shelters that are severely over crowded and only have space for incoming animals for a limited number of days.

If you’re an Amazon shopper, we now have a new way for you to help PAWS here on the islands. Amazon Smile benefits charities by donating a portion of your eligible purchases to the charity of your choice. The link to donate automatically to us, Protection Of Animal Welfare Society Inc PAWS Inc, is smile.amazon.com/ch/65-0037174. This donation does not cost you, the purchaser, anything additional, but will come to our account just for your participation in the program. It’s not a lot, but every little bit helps keep us in business. Please set up this link to us at Amazon Smile today. Once you’ve set up the link, you will always see our name in small print at the top of the page when you go on the site to shop and/or place an order.

Sophie, also known as Snowball, was rescued along with her Mother and five siblings just over two years ago from an vacant house here on Sanibel. PAWS found her a nice home, where she lived for quite some time. Unfortunately, a family member with severe asthma had to move into her household, and she couldn’t remain with the family. She came back to PAWS in need of a new home. We had her in the paper for quite a while and she was suffering badly from the uncertainty in her life. Finally, in early August I received a call from Janice, a local island resident. Janice had been around cats, but had never had one of her own. She wanted Sophie! I delivered Miss Sophie to her new home, but I was feeling a bit apprehensive. A lot had happened to poor Sophie and she was going to be living with someone with no full-time “Cat” experience. However, that evening, my fears evaporated. had a wonderful voice message from Janice. She said she was sitting in a chair with a blanket and Sophie jumped up to her lap and onto her chest, “she is cuddled up and she’s just purring and purring, she’s purring like a baby, she’s a real pleasure”! I still have that voice message. I was so very happy for both of them! Janice works here on Sanibel and I see her from time to time. The first thing she says is how wonderful Sophie is and she is so happy to have her. I saw her last week, she told me that she bought Sophie a Christmas stocking and then pulled out her phone to show me this picture. All heart warming stories are Holiday stories. Now to me, this is a wonderful Holiday Story!

If you are considering making end of year charitable contributions, please think of our animals and consider donating to PAWS. We are a 501(c)(3), and all contributions are completely tax deductible. Please make checks out to PAWS and forward to P.O. Box 855, Sanibel, Florida 33957. Please help us keep our animals out of the Lee County shelters and provide them with wonderful loving homes!

PAWS can always use volunteers, especially fostering volunteers. Please call PAWS at (239) 472-4823 if you can help. We thank you so very much for your continued, much needed, support.
