Friends Fall Book Sale

By Staff | Nov 13, 2014

Bookworms and others can pick up some new reads next week at the Fall Book Sale.

Hosted by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library, the event will run Thursday through Saturday at the Cape Coral Lee County Public Library. The hours are from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 22. A book sale is organized every fall and every spring.

“That is still our largest fundraiser for the Friends of the Library,” Paula Novander, a past president of the Cape group, said. “We support the library in different ways that the county does not.”

The funds help cover the expenses of library programs for children and others, as well as pay for needed equipment like the automated drive-thru drop-off added in 2010. The group recently donated over $20,000 to the library for audio and visual upgrades, including Blu-ray players and screens.

“This sale can raise $7,000 to $8,000,” she said.

The spring sale, held this past April, helped raise about $6,000.

Novander estimated that a couple hundred people attend each of the sales.

Thursday’s kick off is only open to members of the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. However, shoppers can join the group at the door for just $10 per person and that covers the entire year.

“They’ll be lined up,” she said of the members’ only sale.

There will be approximately 8,000 to 10,000 books available at the sale.

“This is going to be one of our largest in years,” Novander said.

Most of the books are donated by the public.

“We’ve had some fantastic donations. We’ve been picking up books all summer,” she said.

The selection varies greatly, from computer and gardening books, to military texts and biographies. There are paperbacks, softcovers and hardbacks, along with children’s books and modern fiction.

“A lot of donations of wonderful stuff,” Novander said.

DVDs and CDs will also be available for sale.

She noted that her group’s sales are known for being well organized by item.

“One of the reasons, I think, our sales are so popular is we take the time to sort them out,” Novander said. “We really work hard to sort them.”

It will cost $2 for a hardcover, $1 for a softcover and 74 cents for a paperback.

“The prices are fairly reasonable,” she said.

The DVDs and CDs will range in price from $3 to $4.

“Also, we’ll be selling our tote bag for $2,” Novander said.

Boxes will be available for people to use.

The group urged residents and visitors to come and browse through the selection.

“There aren’t too many bookstores left that carry used books – so if you’re really looking for something unusual,” she said. “You just never know what you’re going to find.”
