Woman injured in motorcycle crash remains hospitalized
A woman involved in a recent, fatal Cape Coral motorcycle crash remains hospitalized.
Liset Dayana Sanchez-Castro, 24, of Rionegreo, Colombia, was listed in fair condition Thursday at Lee Memorial Hospital, where she was taken Oct. 12 following the accident, according to officials.
At 11:46 p.m., Sanchez-Castro was headed east on Retunda Parkway West on a Yamaha R6 motorcycle, driven by Santiago Cadavid-Velasquez, 25, of 3929 Maxine St., Fort Myers. As the two came upon Country Club Boulevard, Cadavid-Velasquez reportedly failed to stop for the stop sign.
According to a police report, the Yamaha traveled east across the southbound lanes of Country Club, then the front tire hit the concrete median. Cadavid-Velasquez and Sanchez-Castro were ejected.
The motorcycle began to overturn and landed in the northbound lanes of Country Club, before it continued east and struck the curb on the east side of the road. The report states that Cadavid-Velasquez and Sanchez-Castro also continued to travel east, coming to rest in a grassy area.
Cadavid-Velasquez sustained life-threatening injuries due to the crash and died on scene.
Sanchez-Castro also sustained life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted to the hospital.
According to the report, Cadavid-Velasquez was driving an estimated 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. Neither he nor Sanchez-Castro were wearing a helmet or eye protection at the time of the accident.
It is unknown whether the crash was alcohol or drug related. The investigation is ongoing.
