By Staff | Nov 26, 2013

The Sanibel-Captiva Sail & Power Squadron will be offering America’s Boating Course at the Sanibel Library (770 Dunlop Rd.) on Saturday, Dec. 7, starting at 9 a.m. The course will be completed in one session ending at approximately 5 p.m.

America’s Boating Course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and meets the education requirements of the State of Florida for operating a boat greater than 10 hp. The boating safety education requirements are applicable to anyone wishing to operate a boat if they were born after Jan. 1, 1988. Successful completion of the course results in the issuance of a boating safety card by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

The course covers required safety equipment, operator responsibilities, rules of the road, navigation aids, and state and local regulations. In addition, experienced certified instructors from the squadron will cover local knowledge issues including Intracoastal Waterway marker protocols, shallow area, slow zones, and area weather concerns.

The course fee is $40 which covers the cost of materials and also entitles the participant to a six month initial membership in the United States Power Squadron with additional boating courses offered at substantially reduced member rates. Preregistration is required by Nov. 30 and can be done online at http://bit.ly/1drcbPz or by calling the lead instructor Jay Brown at 314-807-6860.
