Cape bicyclist improving after crash

By Staff | Oct 30, 2013

A Cape Coral bicyclist remained hospitalized Wednesday after a recent collision with a car.

Edward J. Bergen, 56, of 614 S.E. 46th St., was listed in good condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported following the accident Friday afternoon in southeast Cape Coral.

At 2:22 p.m., Bergen was riding a Huffy bicycle eastbound on Southeast 47th Terrace along the north side of the road, traveling against the flow of traffic. As he proceeded into the intersection at Southeast Sixth Avenue, he was hit by a Nissan turning left onto Sixth from the eastbound lanes of 47th Terrace.

The front tire of Bergen’s bicycle collided with the front bumper of the car, according to police.

Bergen was ejected from his bicycle onto the upper hood and lower windshield of the Nissan. After impacting the lower windshield, Bergen rolled off of the car and onto the pavement of the road.

Bergen sustained serious bodily injuries and was taken to the hospital with head trauma.

Police reported that Bergen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The accident is apparently not alcohol or drug related.

A traffic homicide investigation is ongoing, according to police.
