Billy’s Bikes raises funds for Camp Boggy Creek
Billy’s Bike Shop raised $2,100 for Camp Boggy Creek by donating portions of its sales.
The camp, located near Mount Dora, Fla., is where children with serious illnesses and their families can forget the word “no” for a little while and embrace the promise of “yes.”
Billy’s fundraising efforts were in conjunction with Camp Boggy Creek’s Challenge Ride, held on Sept. 7. The third annual bike ride departed from the Camp and cyclists took a 60-mile or 40-mile route through scenic Lake County. For the recreational cyclist, a 15-mile Off-Road Ride through the Seminole State Forest adjacent to Camp was also offered.
Billy’s Bike Shop team cyclists included Salli Kirkland, shop manager; Debbie Sands; Preston Schuetz, mechanic; and Billy Kirkland as SAG support. Campers, staff, and volunteers cheered cyclists at the rest stops and as they reached the finish line.
The fundraising efforts and all the training for the “hilly” ride were rewarded with a catered lunch and tour of the amazing camp following the ride.
Founded in 1996 by Paul Newman and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the camp was designed with one simple premise in mind, that every child, no matter their illness, could experience the transformational spirit and friendships that go hand in hand with camp. With unobtrusive expert medical care, it was their dream that Camp would provide seriously ill children with a fun-filled experience defined by compassion, laughter and acceptance.
