By donating proceeds from the sales of Billy’s Bike Shop jerseys and a cool NIrve bike to raffle, shop owners Billy and Salli Kirkland helped raise $2,100 for a very special organization.

Camp Boggy Creek, near Mount Dora, is a camp where children with serious illnesses and their families can forget the word “no” for a little while and embrace the promise of “yes.”

Billy’s fundraising effort was in conjunction with Camp Boggy Creek Challenge Ride on Sept. 7. The third annual event, which departs from the camp, offered cyclists the choice of a 60-mile or 40-mile route through scenic Lake County. For the recreational cyclists, there was a 15-mile off-road ride through the Seminole State Forest adjacent to the camp.

Billy’s Bike Shop team participants were Salli Kirkland, shop manager Debbie Sands and mechanic Preston Schuetz with Billy Kirkland as SAG support. Campers, staff and volunteers cheered cyclists at the rest stops and as they reached the finish line.

The fundraising effort and all the training for the “hilly” ride were rewarded with a catered lunch and tour of the amazing camp following the ride.

Founded in 1996 by Paul Newman and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the camp was designed with one simple premise in mind – that every child, no matter their illness, could experience the transformational spirit and friendships that go hand in hand with camp. With unobtrusive expert medical care, it was their dream that camp would provide seriously ill children with a fun-filled experience defined by compassion, laughter and acceptance.

Camp Boggy Creek never charges campers to attend and never asks to contribute anything other than a positive, playful attitude.
