Captiva Tri raises more for CCMI than expected
The Third Annual Galloway Captiva Triathlon raised more money than expected for Community Cooperative Ministries, Inc.
Proceeds raised from the triathlon support CCMI’s School Pantry and Emergency Food Backpack programs, which ensure 2,000 local children have enough to eat each school year.
Angie Ferguson, race director, said organizers expected to earn a minimum of $15,000 for CCMI, but at the triathlon’s award ceremony Sunday morning they were able to hand over $20,000 for the not-for-profit.
Tracey Galloway, CEO of CCMI, thanked the athletes for assisting the organization’s mission to fight homelessness and hunger.
“The money you all helped raise is going to help a lot of hungry people in Lee County,” she said.
Adults and children competed in the triathlon. On Saturday, 150 children swam, biked, and ran varied distances based on whether they were ages 6-9 or 10-13. Over 750 adults later swam one-quarter mile, biked 10 miles and ran a 5K on Sunday morning in different age divisions, as well as in a new “elite” division.
Organizers estimated that at least 4,000 people attended the triathlon to compete or cheer on their loved ones.
