Arrest made in downtown shooting
Cape Coral police have made an arrest in a shooting Saturday that left one person injured.
Jonathan Baer Edwards, 30, of 4904 Vincennes St., Apt. 107, was arrested and charged Tuesday with homicide murder dangerous depraved without premeditation, as well as drugs health or safety possess harmful new legend drug without prescription. On Wednesday, he remained in the Lee County Jail on $300,000 bond.
At about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, two men in a car pulled into a car port at 505 S.E. 47th Terrace and Edwards got in the back seat. Officials reported that Edwards pulled out a handgun on the driver and passenger, Jamar Lee Martin, 20, and a struggle ensued. Edwards then fired the gun several times, police said.
Two of the bullets struck Martin – one in the face and the other in the shoulder.
All three men exited the car, according to officials. Edwards and the driver fled on foot, while Martin stumbled to the 500 block of Cape Coral Parkway and flagged down a motorist, who called police.
Conscious and alert, Martin was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Officials stated Sunday that he was stable but in critical condition.
Martin’s condition was unknown Wednesday as he was not in the hospital’s patient directory.
Police released a composite sketch after the incident and began receiving multiple tips identifying Edwards as the shooter. One tip placed Edwards in the area at the time of the shooting, officials said. He was seen driving away from the area in a reckless manner, hitting bushes and damaging his car.
An eye witness reportedly identified Edwards from a photo lineup as the shooter.
At about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Edwards was observed running a stop sign, according to officials. During a traffic stop, a K-9 alerted to narcotics in his car and Edwards was arrested for possession of drugs.
He was transported to police headquarters for questioning about the shooting and booked.
Officials reported that Edwards’ vehicle had scratches and damage consistent with striking bushes.
Edwards has a court appearances scheduled for Sept. 24 and Oct. 7.
