Prescribed burns on the Bailey Tract terminated for the day
The prescribed burn on the Bailey Tract was terminated Thursday at 2 p.m. after the winds shifted.
Paul Ryan, fire operations and fuels technician at the “Ding” Darling Refuge, said ignition operations were terminated because the shifting winds would impact residential areas.
“The ignition operations are done for the rest of the day,” he said. “In this case we got what is called a sea breeze, which was going to impact Tarpon Bay Road if we had continued with the burn.”
Officials had only completed 4-out-of-7 compartments or lots in the prescribed burn areas, with three more to go.
Toni Westland, supervisory refuge ranger at the “Ding” Darling Refuge, said officials will wait to see the weather on Friday before determining if the three remaining compartments can be burned.
